Religious leaders at the Coast have condemned the mounting pressure on the government to increase salaries for MPs, senators, teachers and other public servants and their continued strike threats.
The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya termed these incidents as a threat to development.Speaking at Kenyatta High School in Mwatate during the CIPK's peace initiative in Taita Taveta county on Saturday, organising secretary Mohammed Khalifa said the demands for higher salaries are a big disappointment to citizens who want the country to move forward.
“If we concentrate with strikes and push for higher salaries we shall not realise much development,” he said.Khalifa said Kenyans are eager to see the fruits of devolution but the ongoing wrangles and disruptions have stalled development. He said that there are more pressing issues affecting the common people that the leaders should address first.
"Drug abuse at the Coast, poor infrastructure and human-wildlife conflict are some of the issues the leaders should prioritise," Khalifa said. The leaders said they want the wrangles between the National Assembly and the Senate and the Inspector General David Kimaiyo and National Police Service Commission chairJonston Kavuludi to end.
