Coast governors in panic after cancellation of Tana River County cabinet

In Taita Taveta County, a case challenging the appointment of 10 members of the county executive is pending in the High Court in Mombasa, six months after it was filed by activists and members of the County Assembly.

One of the petitioners Christopher Mwambingu, executive director of Taita Resource Centre, said he was lobbying to settle the matter out of court after some MCAs were later convinced by Governor John Mruttu to accept the cabinet list they had initially rejected.

Just before the County Assembly vetted the proposed nominees, Mr Mruttu went on to swear-in the cabinet arguing the assembly had delayed to vet the team.

Before rejecting the initial list the chairman of the majority and minority leaders in the Taita Taveta County Assembly Jones Maghanga and Ronald Sangurani last year claimed Mruttu’s list lacked regional and ethnic balance.
